They called it the ‘Dome’. It was 2007 when we ran the first event in November, all be it was never our intention to run an event in November as we were quite happy with the ‘Spring Fair’ but at the request of others the ‘National Winner Show evolved and now is said by many as the ‘major show racer event on the calendar’ where the show racer fancier is given the opportunity to qualify for the ‘Supreme Champions Class’ which is held in January at Blackpool.

Of course it isn’t just about the show racers, all of the major retailers of pigeon equipment are represented and the last three events have played host to ‘fancy pigeons’ and in fact has had the largest entry of fancy pigeons at any event held over the last couple of years, not a brag a fact!

This year saw the event move home to the Barnsley Metro-dome, however it is fair to say that the footfall on the door was down on our previous events. Was this down to a change of venue, or because the Racing Pigeon’s event was only two weeks later at the Doncaster Race Course, only time will tell. One thing is for sure we will be back in Barnsley on Saturday 22nd March 2014 for the ‘Spring Pigeon Fair’.

For those exhibiting as always we give them the opportunity to get together the evening before and this time some fifty people enjoyed a hot buffet and ten pin bowling all located within the ‘Metro-dome’.

We attracted some 638 show racers for competition and 1411 fancy pigeons. Penning was made available for those who wished to do so with the remaining exhibitors penning on the Saturday morning.

Putting a show on with this number of birds is hard work and I am most appreciative to Mark Rudd and David Richardson, show committee and the many judges and stewards over 50 in total who work so tirelessly through the day for free.
